Three Wheeled Buggies

Three-wheeled buggies are great for walking around the neighborhood or running. Their compact design makes it easy to maneuver even in tight places.

For an easy ride, opt for a pram fitted with air-filled tyres. Look for models with a 360deg front swivel wheel. They are, however, susceptible, to punctures. Make sure you have a repair set.

Sturdy frame

New data show that three-wheeled buggies, that symbol of the noughties that had more money than common sense, are in steep decline. They have been replaced by four-wheelers that are able to handle a wider variety of terrain, while also looking elegant and easy to push.

The larger the wheels are the more your buggy will be able to deal with uneven surfaces and bumpy pavements. The larger wheels, both front and rear enable you to maneuver and more stable while walking downhill or on difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tested the buggy with a newborn and 3 wheel stroller reversible seat year old and found it coped well with cobbles, grass rough roads, dirt tracks and kerbs. She noted that it was sturdy to push, and very stable on difficult terrain. Its tyres, which are inflatable and require to be pumped up regularly they have suspension built-in. This was very comfortable for my kids.

The size and shape of the seat is another aspect to think about. You want the seat to be big enough to allow your child to feel comfortable and allow them to lie down. Certain three-wheel buggies come with the option of lying flat that allows your child to lie flat and face you, while other buggies only allow a face-to-parent one.

The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road and wet walks. It can be used as a one-person unit from birth, and then expands to take two children when your family grows. It is suitable for babies and toddlers up to age four and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, improved 5-point harness and large cushioned seat unit. The storage options are good as well, with a large basket, zip pockets on the hood, and an easy-to-access pouch on the rear of the seat unit.

Wheels with a larger diameter

Larger wheels mean that your buggy will be more stable on uneven terrain, which is ideal for buggies designed for off-road use. In addition, they make it easier to manoeuvre the buggy through tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have the front wheels that swivel to assist you in maneuvering around tight corners, whereas others are designed for running and come with fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability with the speed at which they can be pushed. This can also help when you crash into an unintentional tree root or kerb as the front wheel can be lifted up a bit to prevent you from hitting it.

A majority of 3 wheel buggies wheel pushchairs come with air-filled tyres. This means they are able to handle many different terrains and are more flexible than 4-wheeler. They are also lighter. However, they're susceptible to punctures, so you'll need a repair kit, spare tube, and pump on hand.

Luckily, most models have small folding options that let you remove the front wheels to make compact storage.

Easy to Manoeuvre

One of the major advantages to a three-wheeled buggy is that it's much easier to maneuver particularly with a child in the back. The way in which they are built means that the front wheels rotate on a dime and are extremely maneuverable, making them ideal for tricky terrain like cobbles, parks and bumpy pavements as well as dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3-wheeler with her toddler. she wrote: "The Terrain is a joy to maneuver on rough terrain. The front swivel wheel was especially useful." I was also impressed by how well it dealt with the kerbs, particularly when using the brake operated by hand. It was very stable for descending or on uneven terrain."

The only downside to this great maneuverability, is that the larger wheels of a 3-wheel buggy may make it difficult to squeeze into tight spaces. This is something you need to keep in mind when you live in one of the cities. If this is the case then a 4-wheeled buggy could be the better option for you.

Bumper bar
